Why I'm Joining The New Forward Party

Joel Searby Joel Searby | August 03, 2022

Editor's Note:  This article was originally published by Joel Searby on his own Medium page and is being reposted here with his permission.

This week I helped launch a new political party for America — the Forward Party. I hear your skepticism. That’s fine. But let me say a couple things. First, there’s not been a better moment in our lifetimes and probably not for 150 years. Second, the team we’ve assembled is the most serious, credible, and experienced that’s tried in modern politics. How do I know? Because I’ve tried, and mostly failed, for 7 years. I’ve seen, up close, where the challenges are most acute and the opportunities most ripe. Here’s the story of how I ended up helping to found the new Forward Party — why I think we’re going to re-invent American politics — and why I am incredibly hopeful for the first time in many years.

In 2016 I resigned as the CEO of the largest Republican consulting firm in the Southeast, left the Republican Party and worked to recruit an independent candidate for president to oppose the deeply flawed Hillary Clinton and dangerously narcissistic Donald Trump. It cost me dearly.

For the past seven years I’ve been trying to help chart a new way in our politics. I did that mostly through running independent candidates — for US Senate, for Governor, for US House and down the ballot. I also did what I could to oppose Trump in 2020 — primarily among the Christian community as I helped lead Christians Against Trumpism & Political Extremism. These efforts were mostly a run of failures, pain, more loss and frustration. I took almost a year off after the 2020 election. I wasn’t sure what was next.

Then in December of 2021 there was a meeting in New York City of some groups and friends who felt the same way about the future of our democracy and were coming at the problem from different angles — left, right and center. It felt different. There was humility in the room. A willingness to lay aside differences for the good of the nation. An urgency. Someone suggested that maybe, just maybe, all these groups should join forces. A merger.

Mergers are hard. In politics, they’re nearly impossible and never happen. I definitely wanted to keep the conversation going and be a part of it — but I have to admit I thought the most likely outcome would look like other “reform” efforts and end up with disparate groups trying to do good things and never working together.

But as we kept meeting, the relationships just kept getting stronger and stronger. The conversation got more and more serious. The intellectual work got deeper and deeper. Then it happened. We merged. The right of center Renew America Movement (for which I was serving as the national political director alongside my friend Miles Taylor), the left of center Forward Party (under Andrew Yang’s leadership) and the center Serve America Movement (under David Jolly’s leadership) have now merged and formed a new political party for America: The Forward Party.

That’s all fine and well, you may say, but what do you stand for? This is the question I get the most — and one I’m supremely confident in answering and incredibly excited about living out. But it’s not the answer you might expect. I’m not going to list out our top-down national platform on the tough issues — because we don’t have one. If you think about it for a minute, expecting that is actually pretty messed up. The two major parties presume to tell you, no matter where you live or how nuanced your views may be, what you can and can’t believe. Even when they don’t explicitly say it, the “base” enforces certain litmus tests on the left and the right. This isn’t freedom. It doesn’t celebrate the beautiful pluralism of our nation. And it certainly isn’t helping solve our biggest problems.

Instead, the Forward Party has vision, values and practices which will guide us all as we engage in civic life. In preparing how we’d approach issues, we assembled thinkers, operatives and leaders from all spectrums and we’ve landed on what I think is an entirely new way to think about policy and governing — not just a different set of positions. Namely, we will not prescribe positions or a platform from the national party. Rather, we believe that, within a wide set of boundaries outside of which rest the extremes, candidates at the local, state and federal level will decide where they stand on issues and make their case to the voters.

In Belmont, North Carolina, a Forward candidate for city council may well be a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment and oppose banning all assault weapons but believe in new and stronger background checks, age limits and red-flag laws, among others. In Seattle, Washington, a Forward state legislative candidate may well support banning assault weapons and believe there should be further restrictions on the gun manufacturing industry. These views may best reflect their communities as well as their own personal position — and they will have the opportunity to present them to the voters and the voters (we are a democratic republic after all) will decide!

This is not a wishy-washy approach. Nor is it “centrist” or “moderate.” It’s not “left” or “right.” It’s forward.

This is, rather than being weak, the strongest and most difficult of approaches but the one which has the best chance of delivering real solutions to some of our biggest problems because people can feel free to bring their whole selves to their elected office and be unafraid to work with those with whom they disagree, aiming at practical, achievable progress. We call it fearless civic discourse.

As a social “conservative” on some issues but a “progressive” on others — and a Jesus-follower by faith, I can say that I’m not only comfortable in the party, but enthusiastic about helping to lead it. I’m thrilled to work alongside those of other faiths and no faith. Alongside those whose views on the best way to solve big problems are different from mine. We are a beautifully diverse, pluralistic nation. That is not going to change. Instead, we have an historic opportunity to embrace it while simultaneously building a new viable, credible, durable political party for the millions of us who have felt politically homeless for so many years. To you, I say: welcome home.

I am joining the Forward party because I am utterly sick of the fighting between the two parties. I almost lost my two older sisters to Republican nastiness because I hated “Republicans” and I wanted to ask any one person, business, or organization if they were a Republican or a Democrat before any decision was made by me concerning these entities. I am sick of the turmoil, hate, and indecision inside of me and in our country. I want to move forward. When George W Bush became President, I was so disappointed but I knew our country would basically be run the same way – that all basically changed with Trump. I want to go forward now I want to re-align myself with like-minded people! I want the Forward party to be a beacon of hope for the “regular” person/people. We will all have our own particular views, we will each argue our own view, and then we will vote. The people will truly decide how our country is run.

To all who are new to the idea of the Forward Party, please don’t fall for the media’s narrative that “America” has never been more “divided/polarized.” That is simply not true. The most accurate way to best describe this moment in our country’s history is that the two major PARTIES have never been more divided…..and shame on them letting this happen to our great nation. The leaders of both parties love their party more than their country. Most rational Americans are disgusted by the rhetoric being thrown around by both parties. So, the more accurate narrative is not “America has never been more divided/polarized.” The more accurate narrative is “Americans have never been more disgusted/dismayed with the two parties.” Let’s move FORWARD for our children and grandchildren.

To the person who said, “If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything” I say the following. The two parties make candidates stand for extreme positions which puts the candidate, by definition, in a box with a closed lid. In other words, its the party’s way of the highway or we will crush yo in the primary. Sounds like China, North Korea, or Iran to me!?!

Forward doesn’t have these box-like political prisons for a candidate or a voter. It’s all about common sense solutions and getting things done. Here is what Forward says it stands for.

Free People: Revitalize a culture that celebrates difference and individual choice, rejects hate, and removes barriers so that each of us can rise to our full potential.

Thriving Communities: Reinvigorate a fair, flourishing economy and open society where everyone can live a good life and is safe in the places where we learn, work, and live.

Vibrant Democracy: Reform our republic to give Americans more choices in elections, more confidence in a government that works, and more say in our future.

I meant Democrats more in line with fascism than Republicans especially with their new 16,000 IRS agents that they plan to hire to go after Republican donors. Funded by taxpayers. Delivered in part of Biden. But besides that your article is a nice hit piece against both parties. Because each one sucks. But forreal if Forward party is seriously sending out emails with a otherwise good moving article: but targeting the right with fascist comparisons. Than this is just a hit piece on conservatives. You could of just said that both parties are serving only to their donors when you practically compared and contrasted. This type of garbage makes me lose trust in the forward party as maybe just being a front operation for democrats to win in the next November election season when that comes in a couple years.

I think this is an awesome article if not piece of forward party history. Not so sure about Republican Fascist though? Maybe racist but definitely the democrats less racist, more self serving and even racist than the conservatives!

Yesterday, I worked the polls for the Florida Primary elections. I was the deputy, so my job was to keep order and to greet each new voter and hold the door as they entered. I had cast my ballot the week before, so I was familiar with all the candidates, even with those of the opposite party.
At the other end of the building was a day-care center. Early in the morning, I saw cars pull up and the parents escort their children into the center. Later in the day, the same parents arrived and picked up their children. I realized that not a single candidate from either party at any level cared about these people. This is not to say that the candidates did not invoke terms like “Americans” or “working people” in their rhetoric; but by their policies and actions it is clear that neither party really cares. The issues they all spoke about in their campaigns were either an us-against-them party positioning or outdated broad, meaningless, ideological slogans. All the candidates are about furthering their party’s position and power, and that in turns means protecting the interests of their major contributors. The priorities of both parties are evident: party first, donors second, Americans last.
The Republican Party has turned into a fascist party, and the Democratic Party has turned into an out of touch, self-serving institution.
Today, I made a momentous decision. It was a decision which I did not take lightly. I decided to join the Forward Party. This decision does not mean that I have abandoned my beliefs and confidence in the American system: it means that I have acknowledged that both parties have abandoned belief in the American system.
I am not one that believes that life or society will work out for the better if they are just not interfered with. Just the opposite, I believe that it takes a full-time conscious effort to make things go right or else things will go wrong. We are not in the Garden of Eden anymore. We have eaten the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. It has a bitter taste; but it comes with the being human.
We have problems. We need solutions. Neither party works for real solutions. If fact, I often suspect that they avoid solutions are promote problems as a way to raise donations.
I am not going to talk about the Forward Party here; just to say that it is another option to what we now have. It is not a new party, but rather, a new kind of party. I recommend that everyone at least look at their website to get an understanding of what it is about. Do not rely on spokespersons from the two major parties to form your opinion or the major media either.

Common sense, solution-based policies should be, in my opinion, a central action point for the new Forward party (I just joined). Cynicism aside, you can either sit on the sidelines and complain, or step up and take action. As a long-time problem solver, it takes more than nice words and cheap talk. It takes actually doing something that meets the needs of the majority of citizens. Indeed, if you believe in Maslow’s Pyramid of needs, you know democracy and capitalism should be based on meeting those human needs rather than macroeconomic requirements. It appears to me that the Forward Party is on the right track. But talk is cheap, particularly these days.

As a non us resident, I wish you the best of luck with your endeavor. As a European citizen, I’m appalled by the diversion in US politics. But unfortunately, we also have some of the same diversion elements in European politics. So I hope that your project can serve as an inspiration.

Good article, Joel. I’m sure the skeptics will be getting louder over the next few months, but I agree with you that there’s never been a better time for a new party to emerge. Glad you’re onboard and able to use your talent and skills for Forward.

I’m with the Forward Party to an extent currently because I believe that if something is not done than the already far fetched Far Left will continue to gain more and more traction to eventually instate a dystopian George Orwell’esque like large central government, shredding the constitution and the possible elimination of States Rights. And I believe that this far leftist deep state like takeover will only be made worse by most of the GOP and Conservatives. So with that being, the GOP/Conservatives will only cease to exist to instigate and fuel the radical left wing deep state. Although, I think it is entirely possible that The Forward Party could serve to become a moderate centrist right/moderate centrist left counterpart to the two extreme factions. And I believe if done the correct way, that The Forward Party could win a future election for something as major league as the executive branch. Especially if The Forward Party is built with the ability to CHAMELEON (possible party Animal anyone? Chameleon?) for one presidential run to chameleon to a popular consensus and thus being more geared at centrist moderates one presidential election cycle than maybe the next time appealing to more republicans, former Trump populists, and maybe libertarian voters. Also, I believe that The Forward Party is the only political party that could deliver the United States a Green Energy Package (not electric cars) that is the most innovative with the actual initial premises kept in great faith and value. Other than what the democrats plan to do (garnish lobbyist kickbacks from electric vehicle and wind power producers). Lastly, I’m certain that going forward will mean a renewed sense of patriotism when considering articles like the original constitution and states rights. And I know that Forward will honor the second amendment but may offer insight into how to revitalize a mental health industry that does not work for the folks who are most at risk and who suffer immensely.

I purchased and displayed the Forward yard sign. Put it in my yard yesterday and have already had 3 families stop by to ask questions and state that they think a middle ground is needed in US politics. We live in a small midwest city with a population of 18,000 with many retirees. Many people believe the two political parties no longer represent them. Until Forward, they have not had an alternative.
